Video: Ben McCollum says ‘we’re pretty excited’ about freshman class

Head coach Ben McCollum speaks at Iowa men’s basketball media day on Oct. 15, 2025.

Keegan Murray and the Sacramento Kings have reached a new deal, securing one of the most significant contracts ever awarded to an Iowa native in the NBA.

The Kings and Murray reached an agreement on Wednesday, Oct. 15, on a multi-year contract extension valued at more than $100 million. Here’s what to know.

Keegan Murray’s new contract with the Sacramento Kings

Murray signed a five-year, $140 million rookie contract extension, per ESPN. The deal is set to keep the former Iowa basketball star in Sacramento through the 2030-31 season. The deal is the most lucrative a native Iowan has received thus far upon making it to the NBA. Ames native and former NBA champion Harrison Barnes signed a four-year, $94 million contract with the Dallas Mavericks in 2016, equivalent to between $120-125 million in 2025 when adjusted for inflation.

As far as all Iowa college basketball alums, the distinction of the highest-paid NBA contract goes to former Iowa State player and current two-time NBA All-Star for the Indiana Pacers, Tyrese Haliburton, who signed a five-year, $260 million contract in 2023 to remain a Pacer through the 2028–29 NBA season.

Keegan Murray stats

Murray is entering his fourth season with the Kings after the team selected him fourth overall in the 2022 draft out of Iowa. He’s started 231 of his 233 career games, averaging 13.3 points, 5.6 rebounds, and 1.4 assists per game.

He is one of three players to record 500 3-pointers, 150 blocks and 150 steals over the past three seasons, and is one of only seven players to make at least 150 3-pointers in each of his first three NBA seasons.

The Kings announced earlier in October that Murray will miss the start of the 2025-26 NBA season with a thumb injury. The 2025-26 NBA season begins Tuesday, Oct. 21.
