Speculation is deepening over Daryl Morey’s job security after the company that owns the Philadelphia 76ers — Harris Blitzer Sports & Entertainment (HBSE) — brought former Golden State Warriors executive Bob Myers on board as its new president of sports.
During his 12 years with the Warriors, Myers won four NBA titles and was named NBA Executive of the Year twice as the team’s general manager and president. Before taking this position, he worked as an NBA analyst for ESPN.
In Myers’ new role with HBSE, he will oversee the company’s sports portfolio of the 76ers, Washington Commanders, New Jersey Devils, Crystal Palace F.C. of the Premier League and an investment in Joe Gibbs Racing within NASCAR.
“Our goal has been to hire, grow, and retain the best and brightest executives in the world and we are a stronger, more dynamic organization with the addition of Bob Myers,” Josh Harris and David Blitzer said in a statement. “His experience as an architect of championship teams will complement our existing leadership structure, while also allowing HBSE to maximize opportunities across our portfolio. We’re excited to have Bob continue his storied career here at HBSE.”
Myers said: “This role was intriguing because it provides the opportunity to work with some of the industry’s most talented leaders and executives across the world’s biggest sports leagues. By leveraging HBSE’s global presence in sports, we can create competitive advantages for our athletes and teams that enhance our ability to win.”
What Myers’ Arrival Means for Morey
Myers’ hiring raises questions about Morey’s future with the 76ers. Since becoming the franchise’s president of basketball operations ahead of the 2020-21 season, the team has yet to advance beyond the second round of the playoffs and is coming off its worst season of Morey’s tenure. The franchise is also in salary cap purgatory because of the massive deals he gave to oft-injured stars Joel Embiid and Paul George.
“The transition also adds an interesting new NBA dynamic, as Myers will oversee the 76ers and Daryl Morey, its head of basketball ops. The two men have a noted history that evolved during the height of a Warriors-Rockets rivalry,” The Athletic’s Mike Vorkunov and Alex Andrejev write. “The move could be worth examining for the impact it may have on the 76ers under Morey, and what another established and successful former GM could mean for the franchise.”

NBC Sports Philadelphia’s John Clark reports that Morey will continue to report to owner Josh Harris — not Myers — and will remain in his role as president of basketball operations. But if the 76ers have another poor season, Harris will have an in-house candidate to replace Morey in Myers.
