After spending the summer without a team, former UCLA Bruin Russell Westbrook agreed to terms with the Sacramento Kings on a one-year deal. The future Hall of Famer struggled to find his next NBA home but will return back to California to join forces with another California native, DeMar DeRdozan.
Westbrook isn’t the same player that brought home the 2017 NBA MVP but he provides playmaking, experience and intensity as he enters his 18th NBA season. The UCLA alum will handle point guard duties alongside Dennis Schroder, with either capable of starting or coming off the bench.Â
The Kings now have a plethora of experienced scorers, with Derozan, Zach Lavine, Domantas Sabonis and Malik Monk all alongside Westbrook in Sacramento. Despite seemignly playing forever in Oklahoma City, Westbrook is joining his seventh NBA team after spending last season with the Denver Nuggets.Â
Westbrook started just 36 games last year with the Nugggets but he was still able to average 13.3 points per game while finishing in seventh place for Sixth Man of the Year. He’s still more than just a scorer too, averaging 6.1 assists and 4.9 rebounds in his lone season in Denver. Denver relied on Westbrook in the playoffs, playing him 24.1 minutes per game but his efficiency wasn’t great, shooting only 39.1% from the field during his 13 playoff games with the Nuggets.
The Kings have the talent to be in the mix in the Western Conference but with so many teams in contention in the west, it’ll be interesting to see if Westbrook is able to guide the Kings to postseason basketball for the second time in 20 years.
