The common perception about Victor Wembanyama is that he is one of those generational talents who has the utmost discipline and patience to remain content with the San Antonio Spurs taking their own time to gradually build a young core around him, despite him being aware of his potential to lead the league in almost every statistical category since his rookie days.
However, according to Richard Jefferson, that is far from the reality. In fact, the 2016 NBA champion recently revealed how the French phenomenon demanded that the Spurs organization bring better quality, established players alongside him, so that the whole team could return to winning ways. The last time San Antonio made the Playoffs was in 2019.

Jefferson on Wembanyama’s message to the Spurs
When Wemby entered the league in 2023, Doug McDermott was the oldest player on the Spurs roster at the age of 32, which clearly indicated how the team lacked a veteran presence that could guide them through to the postseason. As a result, Wemby’s rookie campaign instantly became a developing phase wherein, despite him averaging 21.4 points, 10.6 rebounds and league-leading 3.6 blocks per game, no one expected him to lead the Spurs miraculously into the postseason.
However, when Jefferson made this revelation on an episode of the “Road Trippin” podcast, Kendrick Perkins was content with Wemby’s determination and intent to win. Rather, he made it clear that given how seven-foot centers usually do not have elongated careers that last for a couple of decades, Wemby might be aware of this harsh fact and wants to waste no time in dropping years before he can contest for the Larry O’Brien trophy consistently.

“There’s rumors in the basketball universe that very early on, Wemby told the people in San Antonio, ‘I need more help.’ He’s like, ‘I need better basketball players around me,'” Jefferson said. “Mind you, he is the type of player that you move quick on, like Zion Williamson…Blake Griffin? They drafted him and they were like, ‘Here’s Chris Paul. Here’s Jamal Crawford.'”
Wemby needs to win now with the Spurs
That being said, as the Spurs now enter the 2025-26 season, the team’s roster composition shows significant improvement, aligning with Wembanyama’s vision.

From young talents like Keldon Johnson and Devin Vassell, with whom the French phenom has already built on-court chemistry over the past two seasons, to the addition of seasoned players such as De’Aaron Fox and championship-winning players like Harrison Barnes and Luke Kornet, San Antonio now possesses a blend of youth and experience that could very well elevate them back into playoff contention.
Put simply, this balance not only strengthens the team’s structure but also provides Wembanyama with the mentorship and support needed to take the next step toward superstardom.
Considering the Spurs’ six-year postseason drought, expectations are high for Wembanyama to lead the franchise back into the playoff picture this season. And if he doesn’t do so even in his third year, everybody knows how quickly the narrative around him can change and analysts like Jefferson and Perkins are well aware of that.
