More often than not, when a player makes a team’s training camp roster, it is more about the opportunity such a signing creates for that player to land with another ball club. Of course, players do sometimes make the cut and join the team in some capacity as did new Celtics two way guard Ron Harper Jr.
But Harper is what has become something of an exception in the league, and he broke down how the opportunity materialized in the first place at a recent post-practice interview caught on video by the CLNS Media Boston Sports Network. “As soon as my stint was over (with the Detroit Piston) , I was gathering options,” explained Harper. “And my agent mentioned Boston really would love to have me back.”
“In the back of my mind, it was just like last training camp; I was really grateful because I learned a lot of things — they were coming off the NBA championship.”
“So just being here, being around the program, just to be able to see and be able to learn things, I feel like that was a big part of me getting the two way in Detroit and me getting that opportunity,” he added.
“And then, when the opportunity came to come back, that was something I jumped on very quickly.”
