Forward Mohamed Diawara has agreed to sign a standard contract with the New York Knicks, his representation, Maz Sport Agency, announced on Monday.
Diawara initially signed an Exhibit 10 contract with the Knicks on Sept. 16 before the start of training camp. The plan was to upgrade him to a standard rookie contract by opening night that the front office would be able to fit under the second apron.
The Frenchman was the 51st pick after averaging 6.1 points, 3.2 rebounds and 1.3 assists on 43.9% shooting from the field last season with Cholet Basket of the LNB Pro A. He scored in double figures 13 times, including a season-high 14 points and seven rebounds on May 28.
Diawara averaged 3.2 points and 3.2 rebounds on 40% shooting from the field in five preseason appearances with the Knicks. He registered his most productive outing on Friday with eight points, seven rebounds, three assists and two steals in a win over the Charlotte Hornets.
The 20-year-old has impressed since joining the organization as a player who can handle the ball, finish in transition and space the floor a bit. He also projects to be a versatile defender on the other end of the court, boasting a reported 7-foot, 4-inch wingspan.
Diawara secured a place at the end of the roster. He boasts plenty of high-level experience and projects to have a chance to compete for rotation minutes eventually.
