He’s one of the newest players for the Los Angeles Lakers in the 2025-26 NBA regular season.

It’s been a bit of a winding road for Smart to get here.

He’s been a big name in basketball circles for a long time: Smart was a five-star recruit out of high school who went to Oklahoma State.

Since then, he’s played for four NBA teams, and he’s done a lot of good things.

Smart was the 2022 Defensive Player of the Year. He’s made All-Defense First Team three times, as well.

What teams has Marcus Smart played for?

Marcus Smart has played for these four NBA teams:

Smart was drafted by the Celtics in 2014 in the first round at No. 6 overall.

He played for the Celtics through the end of the 2022-23 season.

Boston traded Smart to the Grizzlies in June 2023 in a deal that got Kristaps Porzingis in return.

He lasted less than two years in Memphis, then was traded in February 2025 to the Wizards. Ironically, that deal was a three-team trade that sent Jake LaRavia to the Kings, and now LaRavia has signed with the Lakers for this season, too.

In the 2025 offseason, Smart signed a two-year, $11 million deal to join the Lakers.

Now, he’s a part of a veteran rotation that wants to bring home the NBA title.
