It isn’t easy for Warriors coach Steve Kerr to use lineups that feature Jimmy Butler, Jonathan Kuminga and Draymond Green on the court at the same time.

While each player has their individual strengths and weaknesses, the fact of the matter is that none of the forwards can sink 3-point shots at a reliable rate — meaning all three sharing the court naturally shrinks the floor.

Still, Kerr used the Butler-Kuminga-Green lineup in Golden State’s impressive 119-109 season-opening win over the Los Angeles Lakers on Tuesday at Crypto.com Arena, and genuinely liked what he saw. The 12-year coach shared his thoughts on the trio with KNBR’s “Willard and Dibs” on Wednesday.

“Well, just the athleticism and the ability to switch 3, 4 and 5 — the defensive connection was good,” Kerr told Mark Willard and Dan Dibley. “I thought the offense was really clunky in the first half.

“We started getting the ball moved in the second half, and that’s when the game broke open. JK and Steph [Curry] and Draymond had several possessions in the third quarter where we got things moving, we manipulated the defense and JK had a nice slip to the rim for a layup and knocked down a couple shots.”

As Kerr said, the Warriors’ offense was “clunky” in the first half, and the team led the LeBron James-less Lakers by just one point.

However, Golden State, led by Kuminga, did find a rhythm in the third quarter. Kuminga scored 13 of his 17 points in the frame, and Golden State outscored Los Angeles 35-25.

Coach Kerr can live with that.

“It was way better in the second half than it was in the first, offensively,” Kerr continued. “But I liked the defense and the athleticism the entire time they were out there. And that’s, of course, what’s intriguing about putting them together.”

Butler finished the road win with a team-high 31 points with five rebounds and four assists. Kuminga finished with 17 points and a team-high nine rebounds with six assists. And Green finished with eight points, seven rebounds and a team-high nine assists.

Playing all three forwards simultaneously will be a work in progress during the 2025-26 NBA season for Kerr. But for now, Golden State is 1-0 when trying the lineup, and it’s easier to test things out when you’re victorious.
