Coach Steve Kerr of the Golden State Warriors opened up about the growing pressures tied to sports gambling as the NBA faces a major scandal. With figures such as Terry Rozier and Chauncey Billups arrested under ongoing federal investigation on the gambling crackdown, Kerr described how his players are dealing with the fallout.
“The biggest thing is that our players face a lot of wrath of fans. I’ve talked to our guys, our guys get nasty social media posts from people that bet on games. That’s the thing that I don’t like about this the most, our players should not have to deal with that, but they do. They probably would anyway even if we didn’t have a partnership with these companies.“, Kerr said.
He added, “It’s modern life, social media, everyone having access to everyone else…. I’ve gotten some emails in the past from people I don’t know saying ‘hey thanks a lot I had money on the game tonight and you screwed up by subbing so-and-so in’ or something like that. It’s weird.“
Kerr also detailed the team’s proactive measures: “Our legal counsel came and talked to the team… Every team in the league does this. Goes through bulletin points of everything that is not allowed in this issue. So our players are well aware, all players are well aware, of what they’re allowed to do, what they’re not allowed to do.”
While Kerr insisted the team hasn’t been directly linked to illegal betting, he flagged the strain gambling ties place on player-fan relationships and the organisation. As legal scrutiny deepens, Kerr and the Warriors are openly preparing to safeguard their squad’s integrity, reputation, and focus.
Both Rozier and Billups were sidelined by the NBA following the controversy.
