The Warriors used up all their energy at home on Thursday night and ran out of gas in the Pacific Northwest on the second night of a back-to-back on Friday.
Steph Curry remained red hot, but his game-high 35 points weren’t enough as the Warriors suffered their first loss of the season, falling to the Portland Trail Blazers 139-119 at Moda Center.
Curry picked up where he left off, scoring 16 first-quarter points, including a stretch where he accounted for 11 consecutive Warriors points. He added eight more in the second quarter and 11 more in the second half.
In all, Curry went 12 of 22 from the field and 7 of 14 from 3-point range. He’s averaging 33.3 points through the first three regular-season games.
But Curry got very little help from his teammates. Jonathan Kuminga was the Warriors’ second-leading scorer with 16 points.
Jimmy Butler had an off night, scoring 14 points on 3 of 7 shooting from the field. Draymond Green was the only other Warrior in double figures, adding 12 points.
Moses Moody, in his season debut, scored seven points on 1 of 5 shooting from the field in 21 minutes off the bench.
The Trail Blazers took control of the contest in the second quarter and went to the locker room at halftime with a 13-point lead. Curry tried to will the Warriors back into the game in the third quarter, but Portland had an answer every time and pushed the lead to 16 entering the fourth quarter.
Likely due to fatigue, the Warriors’ defense was carved up by the Blazers, who shot 53.8 percent from the field. Portland made 16 3-pointers, had 30 fastbreak points and dropped in 66 points in the paint.
Deni Avdija led the way for the Blazers, scoring 26 points, while Jerami Grant added 22 points off the bench and Toumani Camara finished with 19.
The Warriors didn’t treat Friday’s game as a “scheduled loss,” with 39-year-old Al Horford being the only player to sit after playing on Thursday. But after the first quarter, it was clear Golden State was going to have to tap into its reserve gas tank if it wanted to start 3-0.
Instead, the Warriors fall to 2-1 and now have the weekend off before having to tackle another back-to-back against the Memphis Grizzlies on Monday and the LA Clippers on Tuesday. Luckily for Curry and Co., both games are at Chase Center.
