The Portland Trail Blazers (1-1) visit the LA Clippers (1-1) tonight at Intuit Dome in Inglewood.
The Blazers have split their first two games, but they’re turning heads — and not just for their off-the-court issues. In their opener, they fell 118-114 to the Minnesota Timberwolves, who reached last year’s Western Conference finals, and kept it close the whole way. Then on Friday, they came out emphatically, beating the Golden State Warriors 139-119.
Deni Avdija led the way with 26 points and six assists, while Portland shot 53.8 percent from the field and a blistering 47.1 percent from three (16-of-34). Eight Portland players scored in double digits. The Blazers also punished Golden State’s 25 turnovers, turning many of them into easy points in transition.
The Clippers, meanwhile, have had a rollercoaster start. They were blown out 129-108 by the Utah Jazz in their opener, falling behind 43-19 after the first quarter in a game that exposed defensive lapses and a lack of cohesion. Ivica Zubac provided some stability with 19 points and seven rebounds, but the rest of the lineup struggled to find rhythm.
Just two nights later, however, the Clippers flipped the script, dominating the Phoenix Suns 129-102 in their first win of the season. James Harden poured in 30 points and Kawhi Leonard added 27 as Los Angeles blitzed the Suns with a 12-0 run to start the second quarter and never looked back. It was the kind of performance that reminded everyone what this veteran core can do when locked in. But the question remains whether they can sustain it from night to night.
Predictions
The Trail Blazers’ pace and confidence will test Los Angeles early, but the Clippers’ home advantage and star power should carry them through. Expect a competitive game with runs both ways before the Clippers pull ahead late.
Prediction: Clippers 116, Trail Blazers 109
