LaMelo has the Hornets flying so far this season
LaMelo Ball and the Charlotte Hornets have begun the season with a buzz, leading the league in scoring with 132.0 ppg and posting the second-best offensive rating in the Association at 124.5.
Ball is coming off 38 points, 9 rebounds and 13 assists in a victory over the Washington Wizards.
The 6-foot-7 guard has been hot to enter his sixth NBA season, knocking down 41.9 percent of his three-pointers on his way to 28.0 ppg.
He’s also living up to his potential as a floor general, cueing the rest of the Charlotte squad with 9.7 assists — good for a tie for third in the league — and is fifth in the league with 23.3 points created off assists.
Watch Ball run the show in the highlights above — finding Kon Kneuppel (3.7 3PM on 58.9 percent from long-range) for quick-trigger threes, flowing into threes and smooth drives.
Few NBA players are more talented. When Ball is on his game, he can impact the entire game while remaining in a comfortable, easy groove.
Check the skip pass to Miles Bridges at 4:09 — he diagnoses the floor in an instant, yet still remains calm while delivering a crosscourt dime with his off hand.
Bridges has been a veteran scoring partner for LaMelo on the fast break this season, while Colin Sexton has brought intensity, energy and experience to the up-and-coming squad.
Knueppel and Ryan Kalkbrenner, both rookies, have also provided a lift for the Hornets, as has former Michigan Wolverine Moussa Diabate, who is averaging 10.3 ppg so far.
“Coming in every night with the right mindset, trying to get the win,” Ball said of his leadership efforts after Sunday’s win over Washington. “Keep the team on board and have everybody on the right task.”

Welcome to NBA ‘Coast 2 Coast Tuesday!’

Giannis Antetokounmpo leads the Milwaukee Bucks against the New York Knicks tonight in the opening game of our ”Coast 2 Coast Tuesday’ double-header on NBC and Peacock.
We’ve got a doubleheader featuring veteran contenders on the East and West coasts tonight, as the New York Knicks face the Milwaukee Bucks and the Golden State Warriors take on the LA Clippers, both coming to you live on NBC and Peacock.
In the opener (7 ET), keep an eye on Jalen Brunson, who’s dropping a cool 30.3 ppg so far this season — well above his career average of 18.2 ppg.
He leads a talented, veteran supporting cast, including OG Anunoby, who’s launching three-pointers so far this year. He’s taking 9.3 3PA per game, up from 6.2 last year.
They’ll face Giannis Antetokounmpo, who dominated on his way to earning Player of the Week honors. He’s earned 28 such awards in his illustrious NBA career — good for third all-time — and could be playing the best basketball of his career.
The Greek Freak is averaging 36.0 points, 16.0 rebounds and 7.0 assists per game, leading the NBA in rebounding.
In the second half of our doubleheader, Stephen Curry leads the Warriors into the Intuit Dome to face the Clippers, led by James Harden. Curry and Harden are No. 1 and No. 2 in the all-time rankings for three-pointers made — expect some long-range fireworks tonight.
These are two veteran teams, featuring legends of recent years like Kawhi Leonard, Chris Paul, Jimmy Butler III, Draymond Green and Al Horford. The Clippers are the oldest team in the NBA this season, averaging 30.7 years per player, while the Warriors second at 27 years per player.
The Warriors’ young talents, Jonathan Kuminga and Brandin Podziemski, showed out in a 130-118 victory over Memphis on Monday night, though.
Kuminga put up a double-double (25 points and 10 rebounds) on just 14 shots, showing the slashing prowess that earned him an extension over the summer.
Podziemski knocked down five of seven threes on his way to a season-high 23 points.
He’s one of four Warriors shooting at least five 3PA per game, along with Curry, Buddy Hield and Moses Moody, leading Golden State to a trademark advantage in threes — they’re leading the league with 70 made three-pointers.
The Clippers are tops in the league in field goal percentage at 52.5 percent, as well as effective field goal percentage at 61.1.
Harden has been efficient so far, averaging 21.7 ppg on 52.8 percent shooting, while lob threats Derrick Jones Jr., Ivica Zubac and John Collins are all shooting above 60 percent from the floor.
Which team will find their rhythm this evening?
