WASHINGTON — The Philadelphia 76ers looked dead in the water on Tuesday against a fast paced Washington Wizards team. Playing on the second night of a back-to-back, the Sixers were trailing by 19 in the second half as the Wizards were out and running, but once again, Philadelphia dug deep and rallied to win it 139-134 in overtime.
This is the third time the 4-0 Sixers have rallied from a double-digit deficit to get it done and win. Tyrese Maxey had 39 points and 10 assists, Quentin Grimes added 23 points and seven rebounds, Joel Embiid added 25 points, seven rebounds, and five assists, Kelly Oubre Jr. had 17 points and 11 rebounds, VJ Edgecombe had 14 points and six rebounds, and Adem Bona had five blocks–all in the fourth and overtime.
Here are the three biggest takeaways following the win:
Grimes can do it all
The 23 points are the main focus people will look at when it comes to this Grimes performance, but he did so many things for the Sixers in this contest. He was active on the defensive end, he was grabbing big rebounds, and of course, made the big-time triple to give the Sixers life with 38.7 seconds left. He can contribute in so many different areas and coach Nick Nurse made sure to single out those other aspects of his game when discussing Grimes.
“Q was huge,” Nurse said. “He obviously hit the real big one when we were down three with 45 seconds to go or something. He came off and just pulled the trigger. Great execution by our guys, great screen by Bona, a great pass over the over the top, and he made a tough shot, but also, I thought Q had some great defensive plays. He kind of got involved in some of the big defensive stops down the stretch. He can do that. He’s got strength and quickness, and it was good to see him kind of max out on that end as well.”
Bona providing a big spark
The Sixers needed somebody to step up and give them a spark against a young Wizards team that was gaining confidence. It appeared the Sixers were going to take their first loss of the season. Especially, when Embiid went to the bench once he hit his minutes limit. However, in came Bona to make some huge defensive plays at the rim and deter every Wizard attempt at the basket. While that energy wasn’t there in the first half as everybody was fighting fatigue, the second-year big man out of UCLA stepped up when it mattered most.
“We all kind of said it was low energy,” Bona said after the win. “I feel like that’s my place to bring the spark to the team. I got it in the fourth. I brought the spark in the fourth and the whole team giving energy to fight back, so that just shows we don’t stop. We just keep fighting.”
Maxey once again leads the way
Maxey played 47:26 on Tuesday just after playing 42 minutes on Monday. He scored 23 of his points in the fourth quarter and overtime as he made sure to be there for his team out on the floor in moments they desperately needed him to. All throughout the run, Maxey was magnificent, but not only was his play fantastic, he was loud with his voice. He wanted his teammates to know that as long as they put themselves in a position to get the job done, they will be able to figure it out.
“I literally said, just get to the fourth,” Maxey said after the comeback win. “Get to the fourth, get to 10. We’re gonna win. We got to the fourth. We got it to 10 and we won.”
