WASHINGTON — The Philadelphia 76ers had some good things happen in Tuesday’s win over the Washington Wizards. First off, they improved to 4-0 as they once again showed their resilience by rallying from down 19–including down by 13 with 5:38 left to force overtime and win the game.
Secondly, the Sixers welcomed free agent addition Trendon Watford to the floor. After missing all of preseason and the first three games due to a bothersome hamstring injury, Watford took the floor against the Wizards and had two points, four rebounds, and three assists in 18 minutes.
“Man, it was great,” Watford said of his debut. “Just watching the team the last two months, month and a half, just practicing and in preseason, I was just glad to be back out there with them. I feel like I’ve been out a long time. So I was just glad to get out there with the guys and get a win. I ain’t want my first game back to be an L.”
Before the game, coach Nick Nurse did say that Watford would play in short stints. Obviously, he isn’t going to push him too hard this early. This is all about making sure he can get out there and play some minutes in order for Nurse to truly get a read on what he can do.
“Not bad,” Nurse said of Watford. “I mean, I think it’s kinda almost my first look at him, you know what I mean? He’s only come back in the middle of us prepping and stuff. It’s really been hard to see. He didn’t really have much of a fall either. I think he looks like he’s going to be a decent part of the team.”
Watford is a versatile player and one can see how he’s going to help this team out on the floor. One of his assists came off dribble penetration and dumping it off to Jabari Walker for a layup and his one bucket came off a post move when he bullied Wizards rookie Tre Johnson for a shot.
“I think there’s some versatility, some passing, little post up game,” Nurse added. “I think he knows what he’s doing out there. I’m gonna see how far can we push him at the defensive end, and what positions he can guard and all that stuff. I think we got a lot to learn about him, but I think there’s some talent, and some know how there for sure to work with.”
At this point in time, Watford is just trying to get acclimated to the Sixers. This is going to be something of a process for him and he just needs to be able to figure it all out. He knows what he brings to the table and how he can impact this team in a positive manner to push everybody forward.
“Just me being able to do a lot of things on the court,” Watford said. “Being able to play a lot of positions, set ball screens, play pick-and-roll with Jo, just being able to do a lot of things on the court. So, whatever they need to do, I can do. Just try to impact winning.”
In fact, Tyrese Maxey stated that Watford has already helped the Sixers in many ways before he even stepped onto the floor.
“That’s who he is, whether he’s playing or not playing, he’s gonna be vocal, but we need that,” Maxey explained. “We need somebody who’s going to be extremely vocal. He’s also somebody who’s getting mixy. So, we need to bring some attitude to our team as well. He’s helped a lot of guys more than y’all know behind the scenes a lot of guys and their confidence and we appreciate him for that.”
