The winless New Orleans Pelicans (0-3) visit the Denver Nuggets (2-1) tonight at Ball Arena in Denver in a Wednesday night Western Conference matchup.
The Nuggets enter with one of the league’s most productive offenses, averaging 130.3 points per game (126.0 PPG per 48 minutes).
Their formula looks a little different this year. Nikola Jokić is doing more distributing than scoring — averaging 20.0 points, 15.3 rebounds, and a career-high 11.7 assists per game — while Jamal Murray (30.3 PPG) and Aaron Gordon (25.3 PPG) have taken on more of the scoring load. It’s a small sample, but the early returns show how potent Denver’s system remains.
New Orleans, meanwhile, is off to a rough start with one of the league’s weakest offenses, averaging just 109.3 points per game. Zion Williamson has already missed a game due to a foot issue and is questionable for tonight.
When available, he’s been excellent — scoring 27 points in each of the two games he’s played, along with 9.5 rebounds and 6.0 assists. But it’s a thin roster, and the Pelicans need Dejounte Murray back to add scoring balance. The bigger concern may be whether Zion will be on the court when Murray returns after New Year’s.
Predictions
Denver’s home-court edge, offensive firepower, and healthier rotation give them a clear advantage. The Pelicans, undermanned and still searching for rhythm, face an uphill battle.
Prediction: Nuggets 131, Pelicans 115
