The Memphis Grizzlies (2-2) visit the Phoenix Suns (1-3) tonight at the Footprint Center in Phoenix in what’s shaping up to be a high-scoring Western Conference matchup.
Phoenix enters with the league’s second-worst defensive rating (123.7), trailing only the Brooklyn Nets. Memphis isn’t much better — the Grizzlies have already allowed 146 points in a regulation game this season.
Devin Booker continues to carry the load for the Suns, averaging 28.5 points and 6.8 assists per game. They’ll again be without second-leading scorer Dillon Brooks (19.3 PPG). Grayson Allen has provided solid support, averaging 17.5 points and 5.5 assists, but depth and defense remain weak spots.
Despite the early struggles, there’s a pathway for Phoenix to improve. Collin Gillespie is helping stabilize the offense after a 15-point, 13-assist performance against the Utah Jazz and could make his way into the starting lineup. Rookie forward Khaman Maluach has seen limited minutes but could, over the season, grow into a defensive force. Jalen Green, acquired in the Kevin Durant trade, has yet to debut but should add scoring punch once active.
Memphis, meanwhile, is coming off a 131–118 loss to the Golden State Warriors. Ja Morant leads the Grizzlies with 22.3 points per game, though his efficiency has been atrocious. He’s shooting just 32.7% from the field over his last three games.
Rookie Cedric Coward, their first-round pick out of Washington State, has been a bright spot, scoring 27 points in Saturday’s win over the Indiana Pacers. Still, Memphis will need Morant to regain his rhythm to stay competitive.
Predictions
The Grizzlies have the edge here because of their greater depth and two-way balance, but if Morant has another off-night, Phoenix could steal this one.
Prediction: Grizzlies 123, Suns 115
