WASHINGTON — The Philadelphia 76ers are 4-0 following their win over the Washington Wizards on Tuesday night. They trailed by as many as 19 in the second half–and 17 in the fourth quarter–to rally and win it in overtime. It was an impressive showing of fight and resilience from this group.

With that being said, if there is an alarming stat to begin the season, it’s the amount of minutes that guys like Tyrese Maxey, VJ Edgecombe, and Kelly Oubre Jr. are playing to begin the season. Maxey is averaging 43.0 minutes per night, Edgecombe is at 40.3, and Oubre is at 38.8 minutes. When considering it’s only October, those aren’t the numbers the Sixers would like to keep them around going forward.

Of course, things will change when Paul George and Jared McCain return from injury. It also helps that Trendon Watford is now back from his injury, but the Sixers have to be careful of the minutes the guards are playing at the moment. Fatigue will certainly become a factor for this coach Nick Nurse in the near future.

“Hopefully, we’re getting some guys trickling back in here,” Nurse said after the win over the Wizards. “Hopefully, we’re not far away from some others. Hopefully, within week or two weeks, or whatever it’s going to be, but hopefully we can kind of just, whatever, hold the line a little bit until we get a little bit more back.”

Maxey, especially, has had to fight through a heavy workload. He played 42 minutes in Monday’s win over the Orlando Magic and then followed that up with 47 in Tuesday’s win over the Wizards. He’s young and works his tail off in order to prepare for moments such as this one, but the Sixers have to find a way to scale his minutes back.

When they get a bit healthy, that has to be the one of the top issues Nurse focuses on.

“I think that, you know, McCain will become a huge part of that three-guard rotation to cut some of those minutes down and be a similar player to all those guys,” Nurse added. “Hopefully, I don’t know, get some other guys back, but I think Watford can play, too. In the backcourt, too. So, we’ll see.”
