The Los Angeles Lakers (3-2) take on the Memphis Grizzlies (3-2) tonight at FedExForum in Memphis in what promises to be a tightly-contested clash as both teams try to build momentum.
Luka Doncic is expected to return tonight after missing a week with finger and leg issues. Head coach JJ Redick said both Doncic and Marcus Smart are available tonight. The Lakers, however, will still be without LeBron James, who continues to deal with sciatica.
In Doncic’s absence, Austin Reaves has stepped up in a big way, averaging 34.2 points per game this season — including a career-high 51 points in Sunday’s win over the Sacramento Kings, their first game without Doncic this season.
Los Angeles has already seen multiple single-player scoring explosions this year. Doncic dropped 43 points in the season opener and followed that with 49 last Friday. Tonight offers a chance to see what the two dynamic guards can do together on the floor again.
Memphis, meanwhile, enters off a gritty 114–113 win over the Phoenix Suns on Wednesday. Ja Morant hit a jumper with 7.6 seconds remaining to seal the win, leading the team with 28 points on 52.6% shooting. That performance signaled a return to form after a rough three-game stretch in which he averaged 18 points on 32.7% shooting. If the Grizzlies want to contend in the West, they’ll need Morant to sustain that efficiency.
Rookie Cedric Coward, the team’s first-round pick out of Washington State, has also impressed early, averaging 16.0 points per game — including 27 in a win over the Indiana Pacers last Saturday.
Memphis ranks 10th in the league in scoring (120.4 PPG) and is a middle-of-the-pack defensive team. For the Grizzlies to climb the Western Conference standings, Morant will to maintain his high-level play.
Prediction
Expect the Lakers to come out on top with Doncic back on the court, even with limited minutes.
Prediction: Lakers 117, Grizzlies 113
