The Minnesota Timberwolves (2-3) visit the Charlotte Hornets (2-3) tonight at the Spectrum Center in Charlotte in a matchup between two teams that share the same record, but different predicaments.

Minnesota enters this one without star guard Anthony Edwards (hamstring), putting added pressure on the supporting cast. Julius Randle has shouldered much of the scoring load in Edwards’ absence, averaging 28.5 points per game over the last two contests — both losses.

Wednesday’s defeat to the Los Angeles Lakers was especially painful, as the Timberwolves erased a double-digit deficit with a late 14-2 run before falling on an Austin Reaves buzzer-beater, a floater after he split two defenders in the lane.

Defensively, the Timberwolves have struggled early in the season, ranking in the bottom ten in scoring defense and rebounding, far from the standard they set last year.

Charlotte, meanwhile, boasts one of the league’s more explosive offenses, averaging 124.0 points per game with a blistering pace of 104.3 possessions per 48 minutes. But that offense comes at a cost — the Hornets rank in the bottom five in defensive efficiency, allowing opponents to shoot 49% from the field and nearly 40% from three.

LaMelo Ball has been outstanding, flirting with a triple-double average at 24.4 points, 10.2 assists, and 8.0 rebounds per game. Collin Sexton and Miles Bridges have provided strong secondary scoring options, each around 18 points per game, while rookie Kon Knueppel has impressed early, averaging 13.8 points since cracking the starting lineup.

Prediction

Minnesota has better two-way balance even without Edwards, while Charlotte’s fast-paced offense should keep the game tight. Expect the Timberwolves to make key defensive stops down the stretch and edge out a close road win.

Prediction: Timberwolves 115, Hornets 111
