The Dallas Mavericks (2-3) face off against the Detroit Pistons (3-2) tonight in the NBA’s Mexico City Game at the Arena CDMX.
Dallas enters this matchup dealing with frontcourt turbulence: star forward Anthony Davis is sidelined with a low-grade calf strain, and Dereck Lively II is also out. That’s forced the Mavericks into smaller lineups and heavier minutes for younger contributors.
Davis leads the team with 20.8 points per game. Even with him, Dallas struggled offensively.
Outside of their 139-point outburst against the Toronto Raptors — one of the league’s weakest defenses — the Mavericks haven’t scored more than 107 points in any other game. They’ve been held under 95 points twice, both times by the elite defenses of the Oklahoma City Thunder and San Antonio Spurs. The team’s experiment with rookie Cooper Flagg at point guard hasn’t paid off yet.
That doesn’t bode well against a Detroit team ranked among the league’s top 10 defenses, allowing just 114.2 points per game. The Pistons’ defense is showing remarkable consistency, never conceding fewer than 111 or more than 116.
Detroit also looks much steadier. They’re coming off a 135–116 win over the Orlando Magic, rebounding from a blowout loss to the Cleveland Cavaliers.
Detroit has also taken down the Houston Rockets, holding a Kevin Durant-led offense in check. Cade Cunningham leads the team with 22.2 points and 8.2 assists per game, anchoring a balanced offense that can control tempo and capitalize on mismatches. Expect the Pistons to be in control tonight.
Predictions
With Dallas missing its interior anchors and lacking offensive rhythm, Detroit’s balance and defensive discipline should prevail.
Prediction: Pistons 119, Mavericks 95
