The Philadelphia 76ers (4-1) take on the winless Brooklyn Nets (0-5) tonight at Barclays Center in Brooklyn.
Philadelphia enters following its first loss of the season — a narrow 109-108 defeat to the Boston Celtics on Halloween night, as Boston avenged its opening-night loss to the Sixers. It was the first time this season that Philadelphia scored under 117 points.
But that’s not something the Sixers should be spooked by. The Celtics have one of the league’s best defenses. And, offensively, Philadelphia has been dynamic, ranking third in the NBA at 125.0 points per game.
Tyrese Maxey has been electric, averaging 35.2 points on 46.2% shooting, while rookie VJ Edgecombe has had what is arguably the best start of any of this summer’s draft picks, averaging 21.2 points per game — the second-highest scorer for Philly, ahead of Joel Embiid. Edgecombe, a graduate of Long Island Lutheran nearby, steps onto an NBA court for the first time as a pro in New York tonight.
Defensively, the Sixers have room to tighten up, posting a rating of 118.4. But that still outpaces Brooklyn, whose defensive rating of 129.1 is the worst in the league.
After opening the season with promising pace and scoring, the Nets’ offense has slowed dramatically — from 120.5 points per game in their first two contests to just 109.3 over their last three. That’s partly the result of facing the towering frontcourts of the Houston Rockets and the San Antonio Spurs. But it highlights the uncertainty over what exactly is this team — including its many first-round picks — is configured to do.
Cam Thomas and Michael Porter Jr. lead Brooklyn with 23.4 and 21.6 points per game respectively, but the Nets’ youthful roster continues to struggle on both ends. Wins will likely remain scarce this season.
Prediction
Philadelphia’s high-powered offense should exploit Brooklyn’s porous defense. Expect the Sixers to bounce back with a dominant performance.
Prediction: 76ers 131, Nets 115
