The Utah Jazz (2-3) visit the Charlotte Hornets (2-4) tonight at Spectrum Center in Charlotte for a Sunday night matchup between two teams looking to climb back toward .500.
Utah enters having dropped two straight, including a 118–96 loss to the Phoenix Suns in which only Lauri Markkanen and Keyonte George scored in double figures. Markkanen and George have both started the season strong, averaging 33.8 and 21.2 points per game, respectively. Beyond that, scoring depth has been thin — and the absence of Walker Kessler (14.4 ppg), who’s out tonight, only adds to the challenge.
Charlotte, meanwhile, is on a three-game losing streak — all by double digits — capped by a 144–117 loss to the high-powered Miami Heat on Tuesday. Scoring isn’t the Hornets’ issue: they average 120.8 points per game, eighth in the NBA. Defense, however, has been their downfall. Their 119.6 defensive rating ranks third-worst in the league.
LaMelo Ball has been outstanding, averaging 23.3 points, 9.8 assists, and 7.8 rebounds per game. Miles Bridges adds 20.2 points per game, while Collin Sexton contributes 17.0. In all, seven Hornets are averaging double figures — including rookie Kon Knueppel out of Duke, who’s averaging 12.3 points and has earned a spot in the starting lineup.
Prediction
With Utah’s injuries and recent form, Charlotte holds a slight edge at home—though the Jazz’s upside and big-man strength mean they shouldn’t be counted out.
Prediction: Hornets 113, Jazz 107
