Steve Kerr is in the final year of his current contract with the Golden State Warriors. The veteran head coach is expected to remain in the hot seat, at least for the remainder of Stephen Curry and Draymond Green’s careers. However, Kerr’s focus has been on helping the franchise contend for another championship, and as such, there has been minimal reporting regarding his long-term future in the Bay Area.
During a recent appearance on an Oct. 28 episode of NBC Sports Bay Area’s Warriors Pregame Live, Mike Dunleavy Jr. addressed Kerr’s contract situation. Dunleavy was clear that Golden State is keen for Kerr to continue in his current role for as long as he chooses to do so.
“Look, the reality is, Steve can stay as long as he wants,” Dunleavy said. “If he’s going to coach here, we want to make sure that he fully wants to be here, is fully committed and all that. And I think Steve’s taking the time right now, he’s taking the season. We’re respectful of that…I’m confident that he’ll be back and we’ll get something done. But this is not like a normal situation with a coach in the last year of his deal. This is Steve Kerr.”
Kerr is in his 12th season as head coach of the Warriors. During his tenure, he’s led the franchise to 571 wins in 882 regular-season games, giving him an impressive win percentage of 64.7%. Kerr has also presided over 152 postseason outings with the Warriors, winning 104 of them, including four NBA championships and two Western Conference championships.
It’s unlikely that Kerr will walk away from the Warriors this summer. It’s more likely that he signs a short-term extension and then re-evaluates his position with the franchise in a couple of years. Of course, nothing is guaranteed until he puts pen to paper on a new deal.
