Bexar County Voters will decide on Prop A & B Tuesday, tied to Project Marvel and the potential new arena for the San Antonio Spurs.
A proposition on Tuesday’s ballot calls for dedicating hundreds of millions of tax dollars toward a $1.3 billion arena plan for the NBA franchise. The team itself has committed $500 million to the project. The Spurs also have promised to pay 100% of any overruns in the budget.Â
Prop B would raise the county’s hotel occupancy tax (HOT) from 1.75% to 2%, and would use that revenue to fund a new arena for the Spurs. Revenue would also come in from the county’s short-term motor vehicle rental tax. The proposition would fund approximately $311 million worth of construction and development.Â
New Mayor Gina Ortiz Jones has not supported the plan, instead pushing for for a “strategic pause” to gather more community input and demand a better revenue-sharing deal from the Spurs. While the city council has moved forward with the project, she continues to advocate for the city to receive a fairer share of profits from sources like naming rights and concessions, as well as a deeper understanding of the project’s community impact before it is finalized.Â
Polls are open until 7pm, with early voting turnout exceeding expectations.
