The Brooklyn Nets have begun the 2025-26 NBA season with an 0-7 record as they have struggled to figure out how to be effective on both ends of the floor. Brooklyn is slowly getting to the level of effort that head coach Jordi Fernandez wants to see each time the team takes the floor, but one of their rookies from the 2025 class is once again dealing with an injury.

According to the official NBA injury report, the Nets have five players listed as out, including rookie forward Drake Powell as he is dealing with a right ankle sprain. Powell, who has missed five of the Nets first seven games of the season, was able to return for Sunday’s loss to the 129-105 to the Philadelphia 76ers before spraining his ankle after playing just four minutes.

“No, I have no idea. It’s bad luck when you step on somebody, and ankles are usually soft tissue,” Fernandez said of Powell following the loss when asked if there was any further information on Powell’s injury. “But, when you step on somebody, you cannot control that. Bad luck. Feel for the kid. He’ll be back soon, because he’s a worker, and he’s great.”

Forward Haywood Highsmith is continuing to recover from his offseason surgery on his right knee and with his timeline for him to return being sometime in December, he will be on the shelf for awhile. The part of this injury report that some Nets fans will have a problem with is the fact that Ben Saraf, Nolan Traore, and Danny Wolf are listed as out due to the G League assignment.

As some fans and analysts have understandably pointed out, the Nets are expected to be one of the worst teams in the league this season so it is important to find out which rookies can contribute right away. However, as evidenced by the move to essentially bench Saraf for veteran Tyrese Martin, it seems that Fernandez wants more of a veteran presence in the rotation as the team looks for its first win of the campaign.
