There’s nothing better in sports than a game seven, and the Nuggets are playing in the seventh Game 7 in the Nikola Jokic era on Sunday. After a strong second half performance from the Nuggets with their backs against the wall, they will be playing in a winner-take-all playoff game once again.
This will be the third time in the Jokic era that Denver has played in a Game 7 in each of the first two series to open up a postseason. They did so in 2019, winning one and losing one, and again in 2020, winning both games.
Christian Braun, who will be playing in the third Game 7 of his young career, was all business after putting up 23 points and 11 rebounds to secure the win on Thursday.
“Obviously we have a ton of confidence,” Braun said. “We just played in a Game 7 not too long ago so we have a ton of confidence. Everybody in this room has been in that moment. We understand that it’s a little different playing there, but it’s the same thing. We got to come out with intensity, got to play well from the jump … so we’ve got to do a good job for four quarters. We’ll be ready.”
Braun played arguably his best game of the series on Thursday, and played great in Game 7 against the LA Clippers in the opening round.
Interim head coach David Adelman knows that he’s got a group of battle-tested guys that will be ready for the moment on Sunday.
“I know I got a group of guys in there that have been in a lot of Game 7s, seen a lot of things, so we’re excited for the opportunity,” Adelman said.
Jokic and Murray will be playing in their seventh Game 7, Aaron Gordon his third, Michael Porter Jr. his fifth, and Russell Westbrook his sixth. While the roster isn’t very deep, the guys who play have plenty of experience.
Jokic, who said that he was treating Game 7 of the Clippers series like any other game, didn’t have much to say about the heightened emotions of a Game 7, especially with it being on the road this time around.
“Hopefully it’s going to be a close one,” Jokic said.
While the Nuggets have plenty of Game 7 experience in the Jokic era, they have all been at home or at a neutral site (2020 NBA Bubble). This will be the first time that they play a true road game, and it’s in arguably the best playoff atmosphere with a top-tier crowd in Oklahoma City. The Paycom Center will be rocking, the fans will be wearing the shirts and the Nuggets will be ready for the challenge.
“This is what it’s all about,” Adelman said. ” A team that’s done it all year long. A group in there that’s hung a banner. I would tune into this game.”
