Gregg Popovich may have retired but the accolades keep coming.

On Wednesday, San Antonio City Councilman Manny Pelaez started a discussion to honor the former Spurs head coach by adding his name to San Antonio International Airport.

“Coach Popovich’s impact on San Antonio is immeasurable,” Pelaez wrote in his request.

Basketball fans landing in San Antonio in hopes of catching a Spurs game could be hearing “Welcome to San Antonio Gregg Popovich International Airport” upon landing in the Alamo City.

The request requires approval by the Governance Committee. Then it can be passed on to the council.

Four other councilmembers signed on to the Council Consideration Request, including Sukh Kaur, John Courage, Adriana Rocha Garcia, and Terri Castillo.

Pelaez, Courage and Rocha Garcia are exiting council as their terms expire in coming weeks and won’t be present for a deciding vote. Councilwoman Kaur is currently in the runoff for re-election.

Councilman Marc Whyte stated, “Coach Pop has been an integral part of the San Antonio community for three decades. I’m certainly interested in discussing [the name change] with my colleagues as well as the residents of San Antonio.”

Knowing Pop’s impact on the city, it isn’t too farfetched an idea to gain support.
