The Utah Jazz (3-4) visit the Detroit Pistons (5-2) tonight at Little Caesars Arena in Detroit.
Detroit enters on a three-game winning streak, led by Cade Cunningham, who’s averaging 23.6 points and 9.6 assists per game. He poured in 33 points in Monday’s win over the Memphis Grizzlies.
Jalen Duren has also taken a step forward in his fourth season, averaging 17.3 points, 9.9 rebounds, and 1.4 blocks. But the Pistons will be without their third-leading scorer, Tobias Harris, due to an ankle injury. Detroit ranks in the bottom ten in scoring but sits top five in defensive efficiency, and that defense will need to carry them tonight.
Utah is coming off a 105-103 win over the Boston Celtics, but the Jazz received tough news earlier today: center Walker Kessler will undergo season-ending shoulder surgery.
Kessler was averaging 14.4 points per game and was one of the few consistent scoring options outside of Lauri Markkanen (31.1 PPG) and Keyonte George (14.4 PPG).
Jusuf Nurkic moves into the starting center role, though he’s unlikely to replicate Kessler’s offensive production. The Jazz will need to get additional scoring from elsewhere.
Prediction
Expect a relatively low-scoring game with Detroit’s defense making the difference here.
Prediction: Pistons 115, Jazz 109
