Rookie RJ Luis has been waived by the Maine Celtics and will undergo surgery, as reported by CelticsBlog’s Noa Dalzell. Luis originally signed a two-way contract with the Utah Jazz during the offseason, but was shipped to Boston as part of the deal that saw Georges Niang team up with Will Hardy’s team.
Luis’ tenure with the Celtics was short-lived. He was waived toward the end of preseason and was expected to suit up for Maine in the upcoming NBA G League season. Ron Harper Jr. was signed to fill the two-way spot that Luis’s waiver created.
“Sources told CelticsBlog that the reason that Luis was waived was not due to his on-court play, but because he is undergoing surgery that should keep him out for a considerable amount of time,” Dalzell reported.
A three-year collegiate product, Luis entered the NBA following a standout season for St. John’s (NY), where he played in 35 games, starting 32, and averaged 18.2 points, 7.2 rebounds and 2 assists. His injury will be a significant setback, as he is now without a team for his first season in the professional ranks and may need to wait until later in the basketball year, or worse, until next summer, before joining a new roster and continuing his development.
Dalzell also noted that Luis’ injury remains undisclosed, which therefore removes the ability to guesstimate a timeline for his return to the court.
