The Brooklyn Nets head into the 2025 NBA offseason expected to have the most cap space in the league to use in free-agency. While Brooklyn has to explore every way possible to make the team better following a 26-56 record, they may be able to take a change on a talented young player.

Marcus Thompson II and Anthony Slater of The Athletic recently wrote that the Golden State Warriors are not expected to allow forward Jonathan Kuminga walk in free-agency for nothing. While the Warriors are expected to extend the $7.9 million qualifying offer to Kuminga to make him a restricted free-agent, Thompson and Slater wrote that Golden State and Kuminga are expected “to explore” sign-and-trade scenarios.

How this relates to the Nets is that with Brooklyn being expected to have somewhere around $50 million in cap space, they will have to spend the money somewhere. That doesn’t mean that the Nets are guaranteed to go after Kuminga, but it does mean that if Brooklyn wants to take a chance on him, he more than unavailable based on the reporting.

Kuminga, 22, is coming off a 2024-25 season in which he averaged 15.3 points, 4.6 rebounds, and 2.2 assists per game while shooting 45.4% from the field and 30.5% from three-point land. Despite being out of the Warriors’ rotation at one point in the playoffs, Kuminga played well when needed as he averaged 15.3 points, 2.5 rebounds, and 1.3 assists per contest on .484/.400/.710 shooting splits.

When it comes to restricted free-agency, the Nets have their own players to make decisions on matching offer sheets on Cam Thomas, Ziaire Williams, and Day’Ron Sharpe. Time will tell what Brooklyn ends up doing with that trio, but the Nets could theoretically pay all of those guys and still go after Kuminga if they were so inclined.

Per HoopsHype, Kuminga is the eighth-best free-agent this summer and is the second-best restricted free-agent this offseason with Chicago Bulls guard Josh Giddey being the highest-ranked RFA. Brooklyn has plenty of choices to make this summer, but it’s good to know that they could have another player to go after.
