Former Pacers All-Star and Indiana University All-American guard Victor Oladipo has entered his name into the G League Player Pool after appearing in NBA preseason games with the Guangzhou Loong Lions of the Chinese Basketball Association, Jake Fischer of The Stein Line reported on Friday.
G League roster were set earlier this week with the season set to begin this weekend, but by entering his name in the player pool, Oladipo becomes a part of a pool of players who can be claimed through waiver order by a team at any part of the season.
Oladipo hasn’t played in an NBA game since April of 2023 when he suffered a torn patellar tendon in a playoff game with the Miami Heat against the Milwaukee Bucks. He averaged 10.7 points on 39.7% shooting, 33.0% on 3s, 3.5 assists and 3.0 rebounds in 42 games with Miami.
Though he didn’t appear in any games in the 2023-24 season, he was included in three trades — going from the Heat to the Thunder to the Rockets to the Grizzlies — before Memphis waived him shortly after the trade deadline in early February.
Oladipo has been out of basketball since and did some television analyst work for ESPN last year. This summer, however, he performed in private workouts in Las Vegas attended by executives and scouts of several NBA teams including the Pacers. He was not signed but was productive with the Guangzhou Loon Lions, scoring 24 points on 8 of 12 shooting in a loss to the Clippers and 20 in a loss to the Spurs.
“As a scouting staff it’s our job to keep tabs on every potential player walking the planet that could potentially help us,” Buchanan told Alex Golden on “Setting the Pace” podcast in July. “We, like other teams, out in Vegas probably saw Victor. We weren’t the only team out there to evaluate him to see where he’s at.
“Obviously, we have a history with Victor. We’re always going to be looking for, if it’s the right player at the right time that fits us, we’re going to have to consider it whether it’s Victor or not. Many teams watched along with us. We get tied to him because he’s a former player of ours. I don’t think we’re any different than any other team that watched him out there.”
