The G League’s OKC Blue had quite the start to their season. They survived a 116-114 win over the Rio Grande Valley Vipers on Friday. The road victory puts them at 1-0 in the regular season.

Both offenses clicked to start. The Vipers had a 37-30 lead after the first quarter. It remained a close scoreboard as both squads scored 24 points in the second frame. The Blue entered halftime in a 61-54 deficit. All things considered, a decent spot to be at.

The second half saw the Blue come out of the break on fire. They scored the first 20 points in an eye-popping 20-0 run in the first four minutes. Several players got hot from the outside. Before you could even blink, OKC flipped the scoreboard and had a 74-61 lead with eight minutes left in the frame.

The Blue scored 36 points in the third quarter. They had a 90-81 lead. It didn’t take long for the Vipers to get right back into it, though. They cut it to a two-point deficit a couple of times in the final six minutes. Tyrese Hunter tied it up at 111 points with an outside bucket.

Jazian Gortman and Malevy Leons hit some big-time buckets in the final 90 seconds to regain the lead. The former put OKC up 116-114 with 16 seconds left at the free-throw line. The Vipers had a couple of outside looks but missed as the clock expired.

The Blue scored 26 points in the final frame. That was just enough to get by with a close road win. The Vipers’ comeback attempts fell just short as all it could do was tie the game, but never retake the lead in the final minutes.
