The Dallas Mavericks (2–7) visit the Washington Wizards (1–8) tonight at Capital One Arena.

Dallas enters on a three-game skid, with growing frustration from the fanbase. Injuries have compounded the problem: Anthony Davis and Dereck Lively II have been out, weakening the Mavericks’ frontcourt, its lone strength.

Davis, the team’s leading scorer, is a gametime decision and could return tonight, though Klay Thompson is now sidelined with an illness.

The Mavericks seem to have moved away from the Cooper Flagg point-guard experiment, starting D’Angelo Russell in the backcourt. Even so, scoring remains an issue — they sit last in the NBA at 106.0 points per game.

Their defense, however, has climbed into the top ten. For Dallas, the priority is stabilizing until Kyrie Irving returns in the coming months and boosts the offense.

Washington has struggled even more. The Wizards have lost seven straight and have the league’s second-worst defense, allowing 130.3 points per game while scoring just 112.1. Their margin of nearly -20 per game reflects the lack of competitiveness in recent losses.

Alex Sarr (19.1 PPG) and Keyonte George (16.8 PPG) lead Washington offensively, with CJ McCollum providing occasional scoring bursts. The Wizards did beat Dallas earlier this season — their only win — but with the Mavericks’ defensive improvement, this matchup projects as more competitive.

Prediction

Washington’s familiarity and home‐court advantage give them a fighting chance, though the Mavericks still carry the edge thanks to better defense.

Prediction: Mavericks 115, Wizards 109
