LANSING, Mich. (WILX) – Community members got the chance to connect with local law enforcement by going one-on-one on the basketball court Saturday.
Law enforcement calls the annual event The Basketball with a Cop initiative. The event allows people to connect with local law enforcement by playing games, listening to music, enjoying free food, and playing against officers in pick-up games of basketball.
Lieutenant Rene Gonzalez with Michigan State Police shared the importance of connecting with the community.
“A lot of times, when you see police interaction or what’s happening out there, it’s not always good,” said Gonzalez. So, we want kids to know that, hey, again, we’re human too. We like to have a good time and we’re approachable. Come on up to us, say hi to us, get a sticker from us, anything like that,” said Lieutenant Gonzalez.
