The most successful season for UConn softball in 24 years came to an end Saturday, with a 3-0 loss to LSU in the NCAA Regional at Baton Rouge, La.

The Huskies (35-19) lost to Nebraska 10-2 on Friday, and were eliminated by LSU, the 10th overall seed in the field of 64 and the host and top seed in the regional.

Lexi Hastings had two hits in her final game for UConn, but the Huskies managed only four against LSU’s Sydney Berzon, who won her 18th game. UConn’s best chance to break through was in the fifth, when Hastings and Grace Jenkins singled, but Berzon got out of it, and went the distance, walking two, striking out five..

Tori Edwards drew a bases-loaded walk from UConn starter Peyton Kinney in the first inning, and Maci Bergeron drew another in the second. Hope Jenkins replaced Kinney and allowed a sacrifice fly by Edwards, but no further damage and held LSU until the sixth.

Kinney returned with the bases loaded in the sixth and got out of trouble, as Hastings threw out a runner at the plate.

LSU (42-15) faced SE Louisiana later Saturday needing another win to advance to Sunday’s championship against Nebraska. The Cornhuskers moved on in Saturday’s first game, defeating SE Louisiana, 14-1 in five innings. LSU would have to defeat Nebraska twice on Sunday to move onto the Round of 16.

The Huskies won the Big East Tournament to gain the program’s first NCAA bid since 2001.
