INGLEWOOD, Calif. — The LA Clippers’ struggles continued Wednesday night as Nikola Jokic delivered a masterclass performance, dropping 55 points to lead the Denver Nuggets to a 130-116 victory at Intuit Dome. The loss extended the Clippers’ losing streak to six games while the Nuggets improved to 9-2 on the season.

The three-time MVP tied the NBA’s highest-scoring performance this season, matching Shai Gilgeous-Alexander’s 55-point effort from October. Jokic scored 25 of Denver’s 39 points in the opening quarter alone, shooting a blistering 18-of-23 from the field while adding 12 rebounds and six assists in a near triple-double performance that left the Clippers defenseless.

“We knew Jamal Murray would be more aggressive in the second half, but I didn’t think he would score 55,” head coach Tyronn Lue said. “He made some 3s. He plays like a guard when Zu was on him with pin downs and all that stuff, which is tough for Zu to try to navigate through.”

Combined with Kawhi Leonard missing his fifth consecutive game with ankle and foot injuries, the short-handed Clippers faced an uphill battle against Denver’s balanced attack.

Bench Players Provide Spark

Without their star power, younger players stepped up in meaningful ways for Los Angeles. Jordan Miller posted a career-high 22 points in his first game of the season, hitting timely shots and showing the confidence Lue has been looking for from his bench unit.

 Two-way player Kobe Sanders also contributed solid minutes, helping the Clippers build a surprising 68-63 halftime lead.

“I think the coaches are showing a lot of confidence in these guys,” Lue said. “These guys are showing confidence. We know we got to do some things better, we know we’re short-handed and we don’t have a lot of margins for error.”

The Clippers’ brief advantage evaporated in a disastrous third quarter that has become their Achilles’ heel during this losing streak. 

Denver erupted for 43 points in the period, with Jokic adding 19 more to his total as the Nuggets built a commanding 106-90 lead entering the fourth. An 18-6 run capped by Jokic’s fifth three-pointer of the night sealed the Clippers’ fate.

“For the most part, the first half was really good,” Lue said. “It’s just the third quarters that are killing us, not being able to score the basketball, not taking care of the ball.”

James Harden led the Clippers with 23 points, making all 10 of his free-throw attempts along with eight rebounds and five assists. Ivica Zubac added 18 points and eight rebounds but struggled to contain Jokic’s versatile offensive arsenal. 

For Denver, Aaron Gordon chipped in 18 points while Murray finished with 15.

The Clippers now embark on a challenging seven-game road trip that begins Friday in Dallas for an NBA Cup game, desperately searching for answers to end their skid. 

The Nuggets, meanwhile, continue their three-game road swing Saturday at Minnesota, riding a six-game winning streak and looking every bit like championship contenders once again.
