Missouri men’s basketball is reportedly set to hire Griffin McHone as its next director of basketball operations.
The anticipated hire was first reported Saturday by Eli Hoff of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch. An announcement from the team is expected as early as Monday.
McHone was named an assistant coach on former South Florida coach Amir Abdur-Rahim’s staff after spending the 2023-24 season as the Bulls’ director of player development.
Abdur-Rahim died unexpectedly from complications related to a medical procedure Oct. 24, 2024, and Ben Fletcher was named interim coach for the 2024-25 campaign. McHone helped USF to a 13-19 overall record and a 6-12 mark in American Athletic Conference play in his one season as an assistant.
Prior to his time with South Florida, McHone served as the director of basketball operations at Kennesaw State and was a graduate manager at Texas A&M.
McHone’s grandfather Morris McHone coached the San Antonio Spurs for 31 games during the 1983-84 season. The Spurs had an 11-20 record with McHone at the helm, and he was fired Dec. 28, 1983.
The hiring of Griffin McHone came after the position was opened by Dalon King’s departure to be an assistant on former Mizzou assistant and current Cleveland State head coach Rob Summers’ staff.
The reported addition of McHone leaves Mizzou with two administrative positions to fill ahead of the 2025-26 campaign: general manager and assistant director of basketball operations.
