The Minnesota Timberwolves apparently took a pass on drafting LaMelo Ball with the No. 1 overall pick in 2020 when he told them he ultimately wanted to be President of the United States.
This comes via reporting from Minnesota beat writer Jon Krawczynski.
“So, we know they picked [Anthony] Edwards,” he explained on Live from Minnesota with Zach Lowe. “But that’s not my little nugget for you all. It’s why they picked Edwards. There were a million different reasons in their evaluation. But one of them was that they had an interview with LaMelo Ball during this process—trying to figure out, ‘Hey, is this the guy for us?’ And LaMelo… did not interview very well.
“One of the questions they asked him was: ‘Hey LaMelo, after you’re done playing, what do you see yourself doing? What kind of things do you aspire to?’
And LaMelo said: ‘I want to be President of the United States.’”
The 6-foot-7 Ball fell to the Charlotte Hornets at No. 3 in that draft.
He was named the NBA Rookie of the Year in 2021 and an NBA All-Star in 2022.
He’s currently averaging 23.3 points, 9.8 assists and 7.8 rebounds for Charlotte.
