You glance at the top of the leaderboard, and it still doesn’t quite make sense.

The Miami Heat lead the NBA in … scoring?! Even without perhaps their best offensive player and their three-time All-Star (for one-third of it)?!

Correct.

And the fact is that they are off to one of the best 12-game scoring starts ever — literally.

In the league’s near-80-year history, only eight teams have scored more points than Miami through 12 games — including just one in the 21st century (2023-24 Indiana Pacers).

Since 2000, the most team points in the first 12 games of the season:

1,508 — Indiana Pacers (‘23)
1,497 — Miami Heat (‘25) 🔥🔥
1,481 — Dallas (‘23)

Miami begins a two-game set against the New York Knicks on Friday. Ultimately, its chances of passing the Pacers after 13 games are quite unlikely. Indiana scored 157 points (vs. Hawks) in their 13th game that season, meaning the Heat would have to score 167 points to surpass them.

While they have 140-plus points thrice already, they have only topped 150-plus once in their franchise’s history: In April of last season against the New Orleans Pelicans (153 PTS; April 11). Accomplishing that feat will be significantly slim without Tyler Herro and Bam Adebayo.

Still, it’s remarkable to see them completely outpace other Heat teams — which featured Dwyane Wade, Shaquille O’Neal, LeBron James, Chris Bosh and Jimmy Butler — in scoring. It is not only a direct correlation to the era that we’re in, but how jelled this unit already is with head coach Erik Spoelstra flipping his scheme in the offseason.

Spoelstra, 55, deserves a ton of credit, but so do the players, who have completely bought in and found success.
