The Memphis Grizzlies (4-9) travel to face the Cleveland Cavaliers (8-5) tonight at Rocket Arena in Cleveland.
Memphis enters on a three-game skid and has dropped four of its last five — all by double digits, several of them outright blowouts. That stretch includes a 131–95 loss to the Boston Celtics, the second straight game in which the Grizzlies allowed more than 130 points.
Offensively, Memphis has stalled, driven largely by the steep decline in Ja Morant’s efficiency. He’s shooting just 35.2% from the field. On some nights, his efficiency is far worse.
There is, however, at least one bright spot for Memphis. First-round pick Cedric Coward has been one of the league’s best rookies, averaging 14.3 points, 5.9 rebounds, and 3.1 assists while looking immediately NBA-ready.
Cleveland, meanwhile, is coming off a 126–113 loss to the high-powered Toronto Raptors — a tough spot at the end of a back-to-back after splitting a two-game set with the Miami Heat, including a 140–138 overtime defeat. Fatigue likely played a role in that performance.
At 8–5, the Cavaliers have seen their offense tick upward with Darius Garland back in the lineup, though he hasn’t played since aggravating a toe injury on Nov. 10 — the same toe he previously had surgery on. He won’t be playing in tonight’s game. And the Cavs say they’ll be sticking with his post-surgery management plan. They won’t need Garland tonight, but he’ll be critical later on in the season as they make their push in a very competitive Eastern Conference.
Prediction
Expect a strong bounce-back performance from the Cavaliers, who should control both ends against a rudderless Memphis team in free fall.
Prediction: Cavaliers 125, Grizzlies 104
