Two-time All-Star Memphis Grizzlies point guard Ja Morant can barely stay on the hardwood anymore.

Thanks to health and suspension issues, the Murray State product appeared in a combined 59 games across the past two seasons, and his availability has been on a stead slide since he played a career-high 67 contests in the pandemic-shortened 2019-20 season. Memphis played 73 games that year.

Amid what’s looking like a lost season, the 6-foot-2 standout departed Memphis’ ongoing road matchup with the Cleveland Cavaliers with a new injury in the first quarter, and has already been ruled out for the duration of the bout with a sore right calf, per Marc Stein of The Stein Line.

Without Morant available for the Grizzlies, Cleveland closed the opening quarter strong, going on a 10-4 run to narrow its deficit to 32-28 heading into the second frame.

Across just 5:59 of action, Morant finishes with seven points on 2-of-2 shooting from the field and 3-of-4 shooting from the charity stripe, two assists and a rebound. Through 11 healthy bouts so far this season, Morant has been averaging 18.9 points on a paltry slash line of .352/.167/.954, 8.1 assists, 3.7 boards, and 1.1 steals. The scoring would represent his lowest output since his rookie season, while his efficiency would be a career nadir over the course of a full year.

Per the league’s latest injury report, Memphis is already without both of its top backup options for Morant, Ty Jerome and Scotty Pippen Jr. Jerome is still grappling with a strained right calf, while Pippen is on the mend from a left great toe surgery and will likely miss several more months of game action. A pair of two-way Grizzlies signings, combo forward Olivier-Maxence Prosper and point guard Javon Small, are both on the shelf — with a left quadriceps contusion and a left turf toe ailment, respectively. Reserve big man Brandon Clarke is still on the mend from a right ACL surgery, but is expected to return midseason.

Cleveland has its own health problems, having headed into the matchup missing two key perimeter contributors. The Cavaliers’ own two-time All-Star point guard, Darius Garland, is sidelined as he manages a left great toe injury. Swingman Max Strus has yet to make his season debut from a summer left foot Jones fracture surgery. Two-way players Chris Livingston and Luke Travers are with the Cavaliers’ NBAGL affiliate, the Cleveland Charge. Jaylon Tyson is on the shelf with a head contusion.

At 8-5, the Cavaliers have been a bit underwhelming to kick off their 2025-26 season, especially on the heels of a 64-18 regular season run in 2024-25. The fleeting availability of Garland and some offensive clunkiness have been part of the problem. Still, they’re 4-2 at home, and should be able to capitalize against a shaky 4-9 Grizzlies squad without its most important offensive player.
