When accounting for his incredible basketball accomplishments, his various humanitarian efforts, and his willingness to continually speak out on behalf of important social justice issues over the years, the legendary Gregg Popovich just might be one of the finest people in the city of San Antonio’s history. And he’s not going anywhere as he transitions to becoming the San Antonio Spurs‘ president of basketball operations.
Doing something like renaming the city’s international airport in the San Antonio icon’s honor should be an absolute no-brainer. It’s a bigger slam dunk than any Spur has made in the Popovich era spanning back decades.

A San Antonio city council member is aiming to make this happen.
Councilmember Manny Pelaez of San Antonio’s eighth district would like the city’s government to formally rename the San Antonio International Airport after Popovich, given his “immeasurable” impact on San Antonio. This is incredibly cool to even consider:
I truly can’t think of a better person for such a tribute. Popovich is basically synonymous with San Antonio, so I hope this motion passes.
