ORLANDO, Fla. — Despite not having Paolo Banchero, the Magic defeated the woeful Brooklyn Nets on Friday night at the Kia Center, 105-98, led by Franz Wagner, who scored a team-high 25 points to go with 6 rebounds, 5 assists, and 3 three-pointers.
Wagner, just after banking in a go-ahead 3-pointer on the prior possession, knocked down a step-back three with 44 seconds remaining to help the Magic pull out a 105-98 victory over the Brooklyn Nets at Kia Center on Friday in Emirates NBA Cup group play action.
“I think it was just the way the game was going,” Wagner said. “The second one, after the switch late in the (shot) clock, just tried to make a play. Nothing special to it. Just try to help the team out and read (how) the game is (going).”
Orlando was without forward Paola Banchero for a second game in a row, nursing a sore left groin injury. But the Magic were able to rely on Tristan da Silva, who chipped in 22 points (8-14 FG, 5-9 3P) and 9 rebounds in the game.
The Magic outrebounded the Nets 46-34 and accumulated 25 second-chance points. Turnovers were the main reason they fell behind early. Their biggest weakness this season, the Magic ended up with 19 turnovers, which led to 21 points for the Nets.
“It was an ugly game in the beginning for sure,” da Silva readily acknowledged. “Couple of guys got going on their team. Didn’t really get too many stops in the beginning. I’m really proud of the effort that everybody put forth and (us) having the same mindset of turning the page in that last quarter and holding them to 16 points. That’s when we are the best; when we get stops and we get out running.”
Michael Porter Jr. was acquired by Brooklyn in the offseason from Denver. He kept the game close for the Nets with his 24 points, 11 rebounds , and a career-high seven assists. Ziaire Williams scored 15 points.
The Magic improved their record to 7-6 with the win, while the Nets fell to 1-11 on the young season.
