SAN ANTONIO — Gregg Popovich, the NBA’s winningest coach, could add another win to his record if San Antonio names its airport after him.

On Thursday, District 8 Councilman Manny Pelaez officially requested that San Antonio consider renaming the city’s international airport after the former Spurs head coach.

“Coach Popovich’s impact on San Antonio is immeasurable. He has not only brought unparalleled success and recognition to our city through his legendary coaching, but he has also become a deeply respected and admired figure within our community,” the request states.

On May 2, Popovich revealed his decision to step away from coaching. During his tenure as head coach, Popovich’s Spurs won five championships, making him the NBA’s all-time winningest coach.

In the last year, the 76-year-old has experienced health problems, culminating in a stroke at the Spurs’ arena on Nov. 2.

On May 5, Popovich passed the torch to coach Mitch Johnson. “I am honored by this opportunity and even more humbled by the people that I’ll be able to partner with and serve,” the new coach of the Spurs said.
