The Brooklyn Nets (2-11) had been trying to figure out what they could do to get themselves their second win of what has been a trying season to this point of the year. Brooklyn has been dealing with some injuries, but it appears that what they needed was to play another team struggling to win games in the Washington Wizards (1-12) to give themselves that winning feeling once again.
The Nets beat the Wizards 129-106 on Sunday thanks to Brooklyn playing solid basketball for all four quarters, especially in the second and fourth periods. Forward Michael Porter Jr. once again led the way for Brooklyn as he had 34 points, nine rebounds, and seven assists for his second-straight great, all-around game while guard Tyrese Martin came off the bench with 20 points and four assists of his own.
The Nets struggled to limit forward Kyshawn George’s scoring as he totaled 29 points to go with his six rebounds and five assists, but Brooklyn also managed to get him into foul trouble early enough in the game to take him off the floor for critical stretches. With that being said, here are three takeaways from the Nets’ win at the Wizards on Sunday:
Michael Porter Jr. Continues All-Around Impact
Porter has been having a great season since the beginning as his ability to score the basketball has proven to be a vital skill for a Nets team that is trying to develop some of the younger players on the team. Porter put up 34 points, nine rebounds, and seven assists against the Wizards, giving him his second-straight game of at least 24 points, nine rebounds, and seven assists.
Tyrese Martin Comes Up Clutch Off The Bench
Martin had been put into an interesting position recently when head coach Jordi Fernandez inserted him into the starting lineup prior to rookie Egor Demin being named as the starting point guard. Martin had been struggling with the change in his role for the majority of November, but it seems that he is finally settling into his place in the rotation after going off for 20 points, four assists, and two blocks at Washington.
Nets Earn Second Win Of The Season
While the point of this season is more about development than it is about winning, it should be mentioned that Fernandez and the players are trying to win as many games as possible. Brooklyn will likely end this season as one of the worst teams in the league so they should be able to get a premium draft pick, but wins like Sunday over the Wizards are needed every once in a while for team morale.
