Biggest NBA surprises

These are the NBA teams we’ve been most surprised by almost a month into the season.

The Knicks (8-5) head to the Lone Star State as they continue their search for their first road win of the season against the Dallas Mavericks (4-11) on Wednesday night.

Tonight’s contest marks the potential return of Knicks star point guard Jalen Brunson, who’s missed the last two games with an ankle sprain he suffered a week ago versus the Orlando Magic on Nov. 12.

If he’s deemed healthy enough, it would be the perfect situation to return in, as Brunson would be playing his former team in the Mavericks who drafted him 33rd overall in the 2018 NBA Draft out of Villanova. After four seasons in Dallas, the Garden State native departed home for the Knicks, where he originally signed a four-year $104 million contract in 2022 before signing a contract extension over a year ago that keeps him in New York through the 2028-29 season on a four-year, $156.5 million deal.

One starter the Knicks will continue to be without is forward OG Anunoby, who will be re-evaluated in two weeks after he sustained a hamstring injury last Friday night versus the Heat.

It’s been a nightmare start to the season for the Mavericks, who have dropped 11 of their first 15 games and are without point guard Kyrie Irving for the foreseeable future after tearing his ACL last March and power forward Anthony Davis for at least the next week as he continues to recover from a calf injury that’s forced him to miss 10 games already this year.

This is the first of two meetings between the Mavericks and Knicks, who will go head-to-head again exactly two months from now on Jan. 19 at Madison Square Garden.
