Is Joe Mazzulla showing us he is an elite head coach with what he is getting out of the Boston Celtics this season? The Celtics downshifted from contention mode this offseason after star Boston forward Jayson Tatum went down injured with an Achilles tendon tear sustained against the New York Knicks in the 2025 NBA Eastern Conference Semifinals, with Al Horford and Luke Kornet leaving the team in free agency and Kristaps Porzingis and Jrue Holiday traded away to other teams.
The incoming players — Luka Garza, Anfernee Simons, Hugo Gonzalez, and Josh Minott — are by no means bad players, but are also still developing as players, with expectations low for all four save perhaps for Simons. But oddly enough, Simons might be having the worst season of them all, and he is not exactly a scrub, either — Mazzulla has been coaxing a lot out of these players.
