PHILADELPHIA — The Philadelphia 76ers got back to work on Wednesday to play host to the Toronto Raptors looking to keep things moving in the right direction. The Sixers entered the contest coming off a solid win over the Clippers on Monday and were hoping to cool down the red-hot Raptors who entered winners of eight of their past nine.

The Raptors took an early lead to build some confidence, but the Sixers did work their way back into things to take a halftime lead. Toronto then used a big third quarter run to eke out a lead and do just enough to sustain it and hand the Sixers a 1210112 loss. Brandon Ingram had 22 points and five assists while RJ Barrett also had 22 points to lead the Raptors.

Tyrese Maxey led Philadelphia with 24 points and nine assists, VJ Edgecombe had 21 points, six rebounds, and four assists, Quentin Grimes had 21 off the bench, and Andre Drummond had 10 and 12 rebounds. Trendon Watford had nine points and Jabari Walker had nine and nine rebounds.

Here are the player grades following the loss:

Tyrese Maxey: A

A matchup with college teammate, and close friend, Immanuel Quickley always seems to excite Maxey. He was up for this one from the start as he was knocking down tough shots and talking a lot of trash to the Raptors every chance he got. All night long, he carved up the Raptors with his ability to shoot with range, make plays for others with his passing, and quickness to get into the paint. There was a stretch in the third when the Raptors forced him to give the ball up and limit him a bit, but Maxey knew when it was time to get going again and he imposed his will on the game. It just wasn’t enough to get it done as the Raptors did find a way to shut his water off in the fourth.

VJ Edgecombe: A

It was a tough start for Edgecombe as he couldn’t buy a bucket in the early going of this one. He had a number of open looks that he just wasn’t able to cash in on and when he did get a lane to attack, the Raptors converged on him to cause a turnover or a wild shot. He missed his first six shots before throwing down a slam in transition to get himself going. The resolve this rookie showed in this one to shake off such a slow start and have an impactful game really shows how much he understands this game. He is so impressive for a 20-year-old rookie guard.

Justin Edwards: C

Getting the start in this one, Edwards had a tough start, but he did put together a solid game. He was able to get to the free-throw line to keep the scoreboard moving for Philadelphia, he was helpful defensively, and was able to take advantage of some open looks. Overall, though, the Sixers needed him to be more aggressive and give Philadelphia a boost offensively.

Dominick Barlow: C-plus

The big man got off to a slow start offensively, but he was all over the place defensively and on the glass. He also made the smart reads with the ball in terms of his passing ability and being able to get the Sixers some easy looks. He knocked down a 3 in the third to keep the Sixers in it a bit when the Raptors were beginning to pull away.

Andre Drummond: A-minus

Per usual, Drummond was a beast on the boards. The man just has a knack for attacking the glass with aggression and finding a way to produce and create extra possessions for Philadelphia on the offensive glass. Toronto’s Jakob Poeltl is a tough matchup for anybody and Drummond made it look easy in terms of the rebounding battle. In terms of his offensive production, it was an adventure as he had a tough time converting on his open looks in the paint, missed an open corner 3, and committed an offensive interference, but then made some big plays in the fourth. The Andre Drummond experience!

Quentin Grimes: A

It was a slow start for Grimes as he missed a number of easy looks, but he was helpful on the glass, did some good things defensively, and was able to impact the game in a positive way until he found something offensively. He knocked down some tough 3s to keep the Sixers in this game a bit as Toronto surged in the second half. He was a huge part of the rally in the fourth quarter and is somebody the Sixers can continue to rely on off the bench.

Jabari Walker: A

The initial stint for Walker was a seriously productive one. He was terrific in the paint as he was aggressive on the glass coming up with a handful of big rebounds for Philadelphia while also knocking in a tough layup and drilling a triple from the wing. The Sixers have been waiting for him to find a rhythm offensively in this one and this is a great contest for him to figure it out. He had some really good defensive plays off the bench as well.

Trendon Watford: C-plus

The Sixers turned to Watford early and he knocked down a wing triple and finished with a tough look inside. He has an innate sense for how to play this game and he did a good job of getting the Sixers organized on the offensive end in this one. With that being said, there were a few tough moments after halftime that played a hand in Toronto’s rally.

Jared McCain: C-minus

McCain finally got his first points of the season when he scored in the mid-range against Quickley and then knocked down his first 3 of the season off a screen in the second quarter. He was also helpful in the rebounding department as he gave the Sixers a boost off the bench. With that being said, it wasn’t a great shooting game and the Sixers still need him to find his rhythm.
