WILMINGTON, N.C. (WBTV) – Basketball legend Michael Jordan donated $10 million to a hospital in North Carolina this week, Novant Health said on Tuesday.
In a Nov. 18 news release, the health system said the NBA icon donated the money to Novant’s New Hanover Regional Medical Center in Wilmington. The money will go toward the hospital’s neuroscience institute and will be named in honor of Jordan’s mother, Deloris.
“My mother taught me the importance of compassion and community, and I can’t think of a better way to honor her than by helping to ensure those in need can obtain the most advanced neurological care available,” Jordan said in the news release.
Novant said Jordan’s donation will advance research and innovation in brain health and will make state-of-the art neurological care more accessible across southeastern North Carolina.
The president and CEO of Novant said the health system was “deeply grateful” for Jordan’s partnership.
The most recent donation was not the first time Jordan — who grew up in the Wilmington area — has partnered with Novant Health.
The six-time NBA champion previously teamed up with the health system to open four Michael Jordan Family Medical Clinics across North Carolina. Wilmington and Charlotte each have two clinics bearing his name.
Deloris Jordan also released a statement, in which she called caring for others “one of life’s greatest callings.”
“I am fascinated by the link between neuroscience and well-being, and how understanding the brain helps us care for the whole person,” her statement read in part. “It is humbling and deeply meaningful to be a part of bringing high-quality care to more people in North Carolina and to improve healthcare across the world.”
A formal unveiling and dedication of the Deloris Jordan Neuroscience Institute is scheduled for early 2026.
