New Orleans Pelicans vs Atlanta Hawks Preview

Another disappointing season is unfolding for the New Orleans Pelicans, as there is no other way to describe the fact that the team is stuck at the bottom of the Western Conference. Nobody expected them to secure a direct playoff spot, but nobody anticipated such a collapse either. After 16 games played, the team holds a record of two wins, while all remaining results have been losses, most of which were quite convincing and without much real chance of winning. It became clear early in the season that things were going poorly when they opened with six straight losses. They earned two wins afterward, but then continued their losing streak. In their most recent game, they faced the Dallas Mavericks and suffered another defeat, despite having a lead in the final moments of the matchup.

Since the beginning of the season, the Pelicans have dealt with major injury issues, especially to their most important players, but even that cannot fully justify such poor performances. Zion Williamson and Jordan Poole have missed most of the team’s games, and without them, the offense becomes significantly weaker. Thus, it is no surprise that their offense is among the worst in the league. According to offensive rating, the team ranks only 26th, but an even bigger problem is their defense. Instead of playing more aggressively in the absence of their two biggest stars, the opposite has happened, the defense is even worse than the offense, making them currently the third-worst defensive team in the league. In the absence of their top two stars, the best player on the team has been Trey Murphy III, who is having the best season of his career, but that is simply not enough for the Pelicans to hope for any greater success.

The Atlanta Hawks started the season very poorly, with losses significantly more frequent than wins, as they managed only one victory in the first four games. In the following part of the season, they significantly improved their form, winning eight out of the next twelve games and losing four. However, they failed to secure a win in their last two matches. They were beaten by the Detroit Pistons and San Antonio Spurs, two teams that have been playing exceptionally well at the start of the season, so these losses do not pose a major problem for the Hawks. After 16 games played, the team has a record of nine wins and seven losses, placing them among the teams currently holding a play-in spot.

However, due to the early stage of the season, changes are possible, as many teams are separated by only a few wins, making it too early to predict where this team might finish at the end of the regular season. Notably, the team’s improved performance coincided with the injury of their star player, Trae Young. In his absence, the defense has become significantly better, allowing opponents far less space and fewer open shots, now that they no longer have a poor defender like Young. Offensively, Jalen Johnson has taken on a larger role, contributing across all statistical categories, and Nickeil Alexander-Walker is having by far the best season of his career, as it seems he did not have such offensive freedom or space to showcase his full potential while with the Minnesota Timberwolves.

Where to Watch New Orleans Pelicans vs Atlanta Hawks?

New Orleans Pelicans vs Atlanta HawksBest Betting Tip and Prediction

Despite all the problems they are currently facing, the Atlanta Hawks are a much better team and have a brighter outlook, especially when it comes to this season. The Pelicans played a solid game last night but still suffered a loss, and it is hard to believe they can deliver two strong performances in a row. Therefore, the most realistic outcome is that the visitors will secure a fairly routine win in this matchup.
